The various Islamist and jihadist factions that overthrew Bashar al-Assad were united by their hatred of the Baathist regime. Now, they need another enemy to maintain their semblance of unity: the Kurds. Anti-Kurdish racism is almost universally accepted among the new masters of Damascus. Moreover, Turkey wants the destruction of Rojava. Unless there is strong American support, the Kurds risk being eliminated from Syria before January 20, 2025, the date of Trump’s inauguration. In this way, the latter will be able to blame Biden and renew ties with Turkey on new basis.
